Disney, Walt(er Elias) (1901-1966), American animator and producer. Raised in the American Midwest, and trained as a commercial artist, Disney moved into animation in Kansas City. He set up his own company in 1920 with Ub Iwerks, called Laugh-O-Grams. After a first series of cartoons failed to make any money, Disney turned to the cheaper combination of live action and animation of the type pioneered by Max and Dave Fleischer. He recruited more animators, and his elder brother Roy, and moved his operation to Los Angeles in 1923 to produce the “Alice in Cartoonland” series. These were quite successful, but limiting to Disney’s ambition, and in 1927 he started a new series with full animation, starring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit.
When the rights to this character were taken from him, he and Iwerks designed a new character, Mickey Mouse, in 1928. The addition of sound to the third of the series, Steamboat Willie (1928), made it a great success.

    Text 2

Throughout the world, at least half a million people are killed and about 15 million injured in accidents each year. In 1992 the lowest death rates per head of population of the order of eight per 100,000 were in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. Comparable rates in other developed countries were 12 in Australia, 19 in New Zealand, 15 in the United States, and in Europe ranged up to 34 for Portugal.

Typically, more deaths occur on rural roads, where speeds are higher than in urban areas, but serious injuries involving a stay in hospital are at least twice as numerous on the urban roads, where traffic faces more conflicts, especially at junctions.

Relative to distance travelled, motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians face a greater risk of death or injury. In the United Kingdom casualty rates per kilometre are of the order of ten, nine, and seven times as great, respectively, as those for car occupants. Among car drivers, and the young and inexperienced the rates are about five times those for middle-aged drivers.
