Two hundred years ago there were no cars or trains in china. People rode on horses or in sedan chairs to go from one place to another. There were no telephones or mobile phones. People wrote letters to get in touch with their friends or relatives who lived far away.
Once there was an old woman who lived alone in a village. Her son was working in the city . one night she thought of her son and felt very unhappy. She could not get to sleep. She wanted to write a letter to him.
What can I do ? I can't read or write , she thought. After some time she got up and knocked on her neighbour's door.
Mr lee , could you please write a letter to my son for me ? she asked.
It was the middle of the night and Mr. Lee was very sleepy.he did not get up or open the door. He wanted to sleep. He said loudly to the old woman, I wish I could help you but I have a problem. My handwriting is very bad at night. Only I can read it. If I write the letter now, I'll have to visit your son and read the letter to him. Maybe you should come back tomorrow.
