I. Reading Comprehension – Passage One (10 Marks)

Read the following text, then answer the questions below:

The first man to attempt to fly in was an Arab scientist named Abbas Ibn Fernas. He lived in Al-Andalos during the Ummayad period. His interest in astronomy and science led him to think of flying. He observed the way birds fly, and by using wings he was able to fly for a short distance. Unfortunately, he fell down and died. This happened in the year 887 A.D.

About a hundred years ago, two American brothers, Willbur and Orville Wright, built the first plane. It was made of wood and canvas and had four wings. After a number of unsuccessful attempts to fly, the Wright brothers made some changes in the plane. They were finally able to fly, thus becoming the first men to travel by air. Today tourists can see this first plane in the Wright Brothers Museum in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, U.S.A.
