    The Rosetta Stone
    • Stone with story carved on it three times in 196 B.C.
    • Written in two languages (Egyptian and Greek) and three different writing
    systems (hieroglyphic, demotic, and Greek)
    • Written so scholars, government officials, and rulers could read it.
    • Hieroglyphic writing (Egyptian)—used for important documents
    • Demotic writing (Egyptian)—used for common writing
    • Greeks ruled Egypt in 196 B.C.
    • Found in 1799. At time no one could read hieroglyphic writing
    • Jean-Francois Champollion: could read Greek. Learned demotic writing. In
    1822, he used Rosetta Stone to understand hieroglyphic writing.
