A model Exam

A- Read the following passage and answer the questions below: ( 10 marks)
Thousands of years ago, our ancestors were nomadic hunter-gatherers. Their food came from animals and fish they had killed, and from wild leaves, nuts and fruit which they had collected. However, once these nomadic people settled in one place, they began to sow the seeds of some of these wild plants. As they worked with their crops, they noticed that some plants were better than others. They saved the seeds from the better plants and so the quality of the crops improved.
The cells of all living things contain genes. Genes are the parts of the cells which control what a living thing will be like and how it will develop.

A gene

In recent years, scientists have developed ways to isolate genes and put them into plants and animals in their laboratories. Scientists can now modify, or change, a plant or animal’s genes. By changing the genes, scientists change the characteristics of the plant or animal. This is called genetic engineering.
An example of genetic engineering is a certain type of tomato. When normal tomatoes ripen, one of their genes produces a chemical that makes the fruit go soft and finally rot. Scientists have been able to modify this gene so that it “turns off” the chemical that causes rotting. As a result, the tomato with the modified genes stays on the plant longer and can also be stored for longer. So genetically modified (GM) crops offer opportunities to improve agriculture.

B- Read the following passage and answer the questions below: ( 15 marks )
The Olympic Games are a sports festival which is held every four years. They are famous for athletics events, such as the “100 metres” and the high jump. However, as well as athletics, there are a number of other individual sports, for example, swimming and boxing. Team sports like soccer and hockey are also played and the number of new sports increases all the time. These days, players everywhere regard taking part in the Olympic Games as the highlight of their careers.
The original Olympic Games took place in Greece from around 776 BC to AD 393. The Games were a part of a religious festival held at the stadium of Olympia in western Greece. The people believed that these competitions pleased the spirits of the dead then. At first, the only event was a race on foot of about 180 metres. Eventually, longer races were added, along with wrestling, boxing and spear throwing. In 648 BC, a dangerous sport called pancratium, which combined boxing and wrestling, was introduced.
The Roman Empire conquered Greece during the second century BC and the Games lost their religious meaning. The athletes became interested only in winning money. So in AD 349 the Emperor banned the Games. That was the end of the Olympics for 1,500 years.
In 1896, the first modern Olympic Games were held in Greece. De Coubertin, a French educator and thinker, insisted that the Games should be for amateurs. In sport, an amateur is not paid and a professional is paid. For many years the ruling body of the Olympics insisted that only amateurs could compete.
