TheEnvironment:
By environment we mean the air, the sea, and the land which surroundus.
This environment should be kept clean so as to make our life better.Man
Pollutes the environment and destroys it.
Air pollution:
Cars and factories send out harmful gases in to the atmosphere.
Moreover, the burning of fossil fuels- coal and oil- in factoriesincreases
the amount of co2 which causes dangerous pollution of the air webreathe.
Land pollution:
land pollution causes great harm to people, animals and plants. Rubbishpollutes the environment. In the countryside many plants die mostly due to theuse of
Pesticides. Using these pesticides year after year causes the crops tobecome
harmful to man. These poisonous substances get into the human food andmay
cause fatal diseases such as cancer.
Water pollution:
Pollution of seas and rivers is an important problem as man needs purewater
For drinking. Fish, animals and plants in rivers and seas are also harmed by
This type of pollution. Detergents, poisonous waste products of factoriesand
Pesticides as well as weed- killers cause this type of pollution. Sewage isan-
other source. One of the most serious causes of pollution of seas is oilwhich
comes from tankers. When it escapes into the sea it forms large slicks, killing
sea animals and birds. These slicks may also spread out onto beachesand
spoil them .

Noise pollution:
Noise is another form of pollution. It is something most of us experience every
day. Noise is defined as unpleasant or unwanted sound. It could be causedby
radios,Tvs,cars,lorries,planes or roadworks.
It affects us in the city or in the countryside, in the classroom, at homeand
at work. Noise breaks up activity, disturbs sleep, interferes with work and can
hinder learning at school. The recent rise in noise levels is due to thegrowth
of population in big cities, the increase in the number of vehicles andplanes
and the spread of machines used in almost every activity.
Noise increases stress which can lead to high blood pressure, heartdiseases
and damage to hearing.

How to protect the environment from pollution???

Cars are great polluters, so they should
all be fitted with converters which remove
many of the harmful gases from the exhaust of
the car.The less we use our cars, the less pollution
they cause. There is no need to use our carsfor
short journeys. And why not walk or use
public transport?

Research is needed to develop alternative
sources of energy. Possibilities are solar
power, wind power and sea-wave power.

power station that burn coal or oil to pr-
oduce electricity send a lot of co2 intothe
atmosphere. The less electricity we use, The
The less electricity power station have to pr-
oduce. Do we need all those lights on? Dowe
need all those ACs on? Why not have a shower
instead of a bath to save the extra electr
- icity needed?

Glass bottles, waste paper and $$$$l cans
Can be recycled. Making new paper from waste
Paper and cardboard not only saves trees but
also saves energy.

"Friends of the Earth"

(FoE) is one of the environment pressuregroups in "Friends of the Earth"
the UK. It was established in 1971. Its aim is to persuade people atevery
level that only by protecting the earth can we protect ourselves against pollu

-tion.If you would like to join the"Friends of the Earth",here is the address.
, 26 - 28 Underwood Street ,London N17JQ. Friends of the Earth
In February 1990, a group of students in Rashidiya Secondary school for boys
in Ajman wrote letters to (FoE) asking forinformation about air , water land
and noise pollution. The students received a number of booklets andleaflets.
In one of the leaflets they read the following:

What can we do???

* Find out as much information as you can about pollution
near where you live.
* Look at your local sources of water.
* Watch factories and chimneys to see if they produce smoke offumes.
*Keep an eye on your local newspapers for articles about pollution.
*Write letters of complaint if you see any bad examples of pollutionin
your neighborhood.
*Tell as many people as possible about pollution .
*Report to the police numbers of cars or lorries which you see making
lots of smoke.
