ولد هنري كارتير بريسون في 22 أغسطس 1908 في منطقة تشانتيلوب في فرنسا، عُرف كارتير بريسون بالسيد المتوج للتصوير المحايد ، وهو أيضا الأكثر استحقاقا لأن يعرف بلقب أبو الصحافة المصورة ، طوّر كارتير بريسون الصحافة المصورة وخاصة التصوير بالأماكن العامة .

ولقد أثرت هذه التقنية في باقي مصوري تلك الفترة وحتى وقتنا هذا ، آمن كارتير بريسون بتهيئة صوره في الكاميرا بدلا من الغرفة المظلمة ، ولم يؤمن كارتير بذلك فقط ولكنه قام بطباعة الصور بأحجام كبيرة خالية تماما من أي تلاعب أو معالجة ..

وعندما تمكن من الهرب عكف على أخذ صور للحرب العالمية الثانية مع وحدة التصوير السرية مسجلا احتلال النازيين ومن بعدها التحرر . قام بتصوير موت غاندي في الهند عام 1948 والثورة الصينية عام 1949 ، ولهذا عرف بالمصور الصحفي ..

و هو الذي نشر فكرة التصوير السريع Snap Shooting و جعل منه فناً قائماً بذاته و ذلك لقدرته على ألتقاط الصورة في اللحظة الحاسمة و طريقته المميزة بالتصوير بالإضافة إلى تعليقاته عن الفكرة و الصورة جعلت منه من أفضل و أشهر الأسماء بين المصورين الصحافين المعاصرين.

و قد تم نشر صوره و مقالاته المتعددةة في أشهر و أهم الصحف و المجلات العالمية خلال ثلاثة عقود و توجد صوره الآن في أهم المتاحف في أوروربا و أمريكا و حتى في المملكة العربية السعودية.

و يعتبر هنري كارتتيه بريسون من مؤسسي و الرئيس السابق لوكالة ماجنوم MAGNUM و هي أشهر وكالة صور تعاونية في العالم و مقرها نيويورك و باريس.

بدأ هنري التصوير بصندوق برانييه منذ الصغر لإلتقاط الصور في الإجازات و بعدها بدأ بالتعامل مع الكاميرا 3X4 و كذلك كان يهتم بالرسم و قد درس لمدة سنتين الرسم في أستوديو باريس. و قد أفادته هذه الدراسة في تطوير عينه الحساسة و الثاقبة للتكوين Composition.

في عام 1931 و هو في عمر 22 سنة أمضي هنري عاماً في الصيد في غرب أفريقيا بعدها عاد و بدأأ بالعمل في التصوير مبتدأً بكاميرا لايكا و بدأ بالتصوير لصور في الشارع الحي بأستخدام كاميرات 35 ملم.

في بداية الحرب العالمية الثانية أنضم هنري للجيش الفرنسي و أعتقلته القوات الألمانية، بعدها تمكن من الفرار من المعتقل و شارك في المقاومة الفرنسية حتى نهاية الحرب العالمية الثامية.
عاد بعدها لعمله كمصور صحفي و كون وكالة ماجنوم للتصوير عام 1947. و شارك في تغطيات المجلات المشهورة من أوروبا لأمريكا و حتى الهند و الصين و روسيا.
