UAE Labour Market – Past
“Thirty years ago the UAE was one of the least developed countries of the world. Today, it has achieved an income level comparable to that of the industrialized nations. The UAE did not pass through the hypothetical development ‘stages’ that most developed countries seem to have experienced. Rather, its large oil revenues have allowed her to leap these stages to the stage of high mass consumption. Massive oil revenues have enabled the UAE to short-cut the usually difficult and lengthy process of saving and capital accumulation necessary for economic development.” (1) A very important job that nourished the economy in the past was fishing. There were many ships that went into the sea and travelled enormous lengths into the sea searching for the fish. After some time in the past, the Emirates started to have trade with the surrounding countries such as India and Sudan. Many years ago Emirates had a very different kind of work labour than today it has. In the past the UAE had many different fields of work that were completely unlike today. The Emiratis used to work in land and on the sea. There were many inland labours as such jobs depend on keeping the sheep and raising camels. Such these jobs were very common in a society that had a little trade with the whole world. However, there were as well many people who worked on the sea. They depended on what the sea has. For example, there were the diving for the precious XXXXls in the far depth of the gulf such as gold and pearls. They started to exchange what they had with the great numerous goods in India such as rice and wheat. They started to build a primitive global market between the countries in the Arabian Peninsula as they connected their currency with India and Qatar later. The women had a very limited contribution in the labour market in the past as they had to stay at home all the time. Nevertheless, they shared the husbands in the daily life such as raising and keeping camels, goats, and sheep. There were no private and public sector as it was only one public sector. Moreover, there were not many expats at that time in the UAE. It was very hard to keep one specific kind of labour in the UAE as there are two main seasons the winter and summer. XXXX of these seasons used to have a very strong effect upon determining the kind of work in the UAE. In the summer they used to travel and most of the work was outside the country. On the other hand women had a rare role in such kind of jobs. But it was difficult to earn a lot of money and expand their trade due to the far distances and transportation difficulties.
UAE Labour Market – Present
“Many UAE citizens are employed by the public sector or in sectors where employment of local citizens is encouraged by the government, such as the financial sector. Unemployment is quite low compared to the rest of the world – approximately 4 per cent. This makes the UAE labour market unique, and companies setting up in the UAE will have to take these factors into consideration when planning their operations. In most cases, the majority of the workforce will have to be imported from abroad” (2)
Nowadays, there are many changes that make the UAE one of the best labour markets all over the world which attracts a lot of work forces from all over the world and the number is increasing. The UAE has witnessed the greatest changes in labour work at the modern age as it has the oil. The variation in work fields provides all the Emirates with unlimited number of job and chances to have their own work. However, it is not the case in all the UAE. After the oil discovery, the UAE has widened its labour to include all the different fields of investment and trade. The UAE today is one of the biggest markets in the whole world. In other words, Dubai for example is the biggest market in the UAE whereas the Western Region does not have the same amount of trade even it has all the qualifications that make it one of the biggest economical markets in the UAE. Most of people come here for money. There are as well many public and private sector that provide the Emirati Market with incredible size of trade in the whole world. One of the main features of the UAE market is that the industrial sector is growing very fast. However, it is not the case in the entire sector as the instruction field has experienced harsh decline after the global financial crisis since 2008. Generally, there are no differences in the fields of jobs for men and women as XXXX have all the facilities to get any job they wish. We can now see women and men work at the same place with the same salaries without any gender discrimination. The UAE market is facing a challenge of what would happen after the oil wells dry. Besides, the Emiratis suffered to get job like the expats who controlled many high job nowadays with high salaries. Moreover, the fast pace of change in the technology does not match a similar change in the students’ progress to cope with it.
UAE Labour Market – Future
“The UAE will improve its global standing in labour market efficiency on the heels of the new rules to govern the flexibility of hiring practices, the International Labour Organisation and analysts said.” (3) No one can predict what is going to happen in the near future in the UAE labour markets as every thing is still unpredictable due to the changes in the labour trends all over the world. The oil wells will dry and consequently all the factories and cars will pile to get the oil with high prices that they will not be able to offer as they will not have any other income sources rather than what they already have today. On other words, I would believe that the UAE is going to suffer on of the hardest decline in all the sectors whether they are public or private in case the government does not take any steps. I think that they will go back hundreds of years leaving their high skyscrapers empty and go to the desert again. The only chance in the future will be for the tourism sector. All the people all over the world will come here to see the empty skyscraper and streets. However, the tourism sector will need the trade sector to provide it the tourist needs. Eventually, I think that Dubai will be the main \market in the UEA as it will depend on the port. They will lose every thing except the tall building they have build. XXXX women and men will not have any chance here as there are no sing of any technological progress. They will suffer from the lack of every thing to the extent that they will travel to look for job in the countries with the stable sources of economy such as those countries with rivers and agriculture. The employment rates will by the highest in the entire world as all the people here will be not ready for such fast coming change. I suppose that by day and night the UAE will be a desert again. The only challenge for the labour here would be to find a work in order to get the primary needs such as food and accommodation. They will raise animals again in the far deserts. The industry sector will be a sort of memory. On final comment, the UAE government should be ready for the coming financial crisis that would destroy the UAE economy in a day and night.
