Abu Dhabi: Hotels and hotel apartments in Abu Dhabi achieved a 6 per cent rise in guests last month compared to August 2009 with 122,475 guests staying in properties throughout the emirate, the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) said in a statement on Tuesday.
The increased performance took the number of hotel guests in the first eight months of this year to 1,196,768 — an increase of 15 per cent over the same period last year, ADTA said.
"This is a particularly heartening result given that August is traditionally a slow month, being one of the hottest and which this year also coincided with Ramadan," said Mubarak Al Muhairi, Director General of ADTA.
However, data compiled by international consultancy firm Deloitte on the hospitality industry in the Middle East showed recently that Abu Dhabi's hotel occupancy was down 25.9 per cent to 56.3 per cent between January and July. The decline is attributed to the addition of new capacity, according to Rob O'Hanlon, Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure Partner at Deloitte in the Middle East. Deloitte's results are based on data by sector specialist STR Global.
In an outlook, the Deloitte report stated that Abu Dhabi's hotels "will bene-fit from large-scale events to boost occupancy in the months to come."
Knock-on effect
Al Muhairi said additional room capacity is continuing to drive down overall occupancy levels which slipped 21 per cent to 51 per cent in August this year with a knock-on effect on average room rates which were down 24 per cent.
"We are now a competitive destination after having previously been criticised by the trade and meetings planners for being too expensive, a more realistic balance is now being sought between the needs of investors and those of the consumer, which we would see at a more healthy occupancy of around 65 per cent to 75 per cent," he said.
Figures released by ADTA show that the number of guest nights — not to be confused with hotel occupancy which is related to capacity — achieved last month rose 10 per cent on August 2009 with a 4 per cent increase in the average length of stay which rose to 2.92 nights.
"Year-on-year we are two-thirds of the way to achieving our annual target of a 10 per cent increase in hotel guests to 1.65 million and this is without the pull of our headline attraction, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi which will open in October and our flagship event, the Formula One Grand Prix, which takes place in Nov-ember," said Al Muhairi.
Domestic tourism remains buoyant and shows a 15 per cent year-on-year increase, said ADTA.
International market
The UK continues to be Abu Dhabi's top international market producing an 18 per cent rise with some 75,565 British nationals staying in the emirate's hotels in the first eight months.
In the first eight months, 686,981 GCC nationals were staying in Abu Dhabi properties — a 20 per cent rise on the same period last year.
Growth was particularly strong from Saudi Arabia with figures showing a 23 per cent year-on-year increase.
Leven Tekun, Director of Sales and Marketing at the Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, said: "The occupancy rate [this August] at the Shangri-La, Qaryat Al Beri was on a par with the rest of our competitors across the capital."
He added that "we witnessed a single-digit drop in occupancy compared to last August, which is fully expected seeing as there are more rooms available in Abu Dhabi and the fact that Ramadan, where we traditionally see a drop in occupancy, took place during the bulk of August."
